Core Auto Insurance Coverages
What is Bodily Injury Liability Coverage?
Bodily Injury Liability Coverage on your auto insurance is the coverage that is going to protect you and your financial interest in the event you injure another party in an accident.
It is the coverage that is required by New York State Law to have a vehicle on the road or to have license plates. In New York if you have plates registered on a car you need to carry liability insurance. Even if that car is un-driveable.
Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage
This coverage pays you, in the event that you are injured by another party, and that other party was either unidentified, does not have any insurance or they weren’t carrying a high enough limit of Bodily Injury Liability to cover your expenses.
This is also a very important part of your auto policy because you have zero control over how much insurance other people are driving around with.
Studies show that 40% of all New York Drivers have either no liability coverage or state minimum limits.
What is Property Damage Coverage?
Property Damage Liability is the coverage that helps pay when you damage someone's car in an accident, or a fixed object like a guard rail, house or other property that belongs to someone else.
New York State requires you to carry a minimum Property Damage limit of $10,000.
Scan the vehicles on the road around you, the next time that you’re driving. That $10,000 minimum just doesn’t stretch the way it might have used to, so it may not cover the total cost to repair the automobile that you were involved in the accident with.
NY State No Fault- Personal Injury Protection Coverage
Do you understand New York State No-Fault Coverage? Don’t worry, most people don’t. It sounds more like coverage for when someone hits you and you are NOT at fault in the accident. The problem is, New York State No-Fault Coverage is a term that is used but not actually what the coverage in the policy is called.
New York State no-fault coverage is another name for your personal injury protection.
Personal injury protection is a mandatory coverage in the state of New York with a base limit of $50,000 per person. This coverage includes limits for Work Loss and Death Benefits.
Your auto insurance policy should have another coverage called additional personal injury protection or PIP. This allows you to increase the base coverage’s up to higher amounts.
What is Comprehensive & Collision Coverage?
Comprehensive and Collision Coverage make up the physical damage portion of your auto insurance policy.
It is the coverage that is going to pay when you have damage to YOUR vehicle.
Physical damage coverage isn’t automatically included and required in New York. It needs to be added on an individual car basis.
Comprehensive Coverage covers against verify specific things including: Fire, Theft, Vandalism, Falling Objects, or if you hit an animal like a deer. It also handles the glass coverage.
Collision coverage basically covers anything else when it comes to damage on your vehicle.
What is Rental Reimbursement?
Your personal auto insurance policy has a coverage called Rental Reimbursement. Rental Reimbursement is the coverage that allows you to rent a vehicle if your car is un-drivable or if it’s getting repaired due to an accident or a covered loss.
Rental Reimbursement coverage is only available when you carry physical damage coverage both comprehensive and collision coverage but it is not automatically included. You need to add this coverage to each individual vehicle.
