Insurance when renting a Vehicle
If you are in the state of New York, you may know that when you rent a car, whether on vacation or to drive locally while your car is getting fixed, that you most likely don’t need to buy insurance from the rental car company. To find out more details on that jump over to our blog we did on that subject.
Rental Car vs. Rental Truck
In NY State your personal auto policy will only extend coverage to a rental vehicle if it is a private passenger vehicle. The coverage is extended off your Liability portion in the event of an accident. That is a huge difference compared to other states whose coverage extended off your physical damage coverage. That leaves a gap in your coverage for Loss of Use of the rental car for the Rental business.
A Rental Truck like a moving truck does not fit in the category of Private Passenger therefore, no coverage is extended from your auto policy.
You must purchase the insurance for the Moving Truck when you rent it. Even though you plan to have the truck one day or maybe only a few hours, not having that insurance could put you in a very difficult spot if you were to get in an accident.
On a side note, those trucks are not easy to drive. If you have never done it before, take our word for it, it is difficult.
